Paul Trimper had the idea to start a not-for-profit when he started to play hockey at the age of 33 and saw the desperate need for sports equipment, exercise space, and the motivation for physicality in his community of Watertown, NY. There were no organized leagues, teams, or any real opportunities to play for adults in his town of over 40,000 people.
Paul and Anthony Netto first used Servico in 2017 for a business formation, Power Play Sports LLC. Power Play Sports LLC operates a 4,000 sq foot hockey training facility in Watertown, NY. The training facility offers shooting stalls with a radar gun, a 1,000 sq. foot mini ice rink, a gym, a stickhandling area, customized player development programs for all levels, coaching, and a hockey pro shop. Based on their initial experience they turned again to Servico for assistance with the formation of this new not-for-profit.
Paul and three other founding directors, Anthony, Vega Nutting, and Kristy Trimper have worked together extensively in the local hockey community and wanted to expand their work to span all sports. They created Power Play Sports Foundation Inc. in hopes of making sports more accessible and changing the mindset towards physical activity in his town.
Starting a not-for-profit can be intimidating and confusing, but Paul said Servico made it simple.
“Scott gave an easy breakdown of the steps and the cost of a not-for-profit,” said Paul. “Going to him was an easy decision.”
Servico is currently assisting Paul and his team with the not-for-profit registration process. Servico has already prepared and filed the Certificate of Incorporation for Power Play Sports Foundation Inc. with the NYS Secretary of State, and is currently working to obtain 501(c)3 status with the IRS and register NYS Charities Bureau.
A 501(c)3 is a corporation that is tax exempt due to its charitable programs. It can be religious, educational, charitable, scientific, literary, foster national or amateur sports competition, or prevent cruelty to children or animals.

“Power Play Sports Foundation will promote and enable sports for all ages,” said Paul. By promoting sports and physical activity, the Power Play Sports Foundation will help make people aware of the physical and mental health benefits associated with exercise. The Power Play Sports Foundation will enable people to accomplish this goal by assisting financially.
They want to build in phases with the not-for-profit, slowly leading up to its long-term goal. Eventually, they would like to open a not-for-profit community center in their town with a year-round ice rink. For now, they plan to use the Power Play Sports training facility as the home base for their new not-for-profit until they can expand into more space.
One of the main goals the Power Play Sports Foundation will initially work on is to donate, re-use, and collect used sports equipment. Paul noted that parents are often unable to buy their children brand new sports equipment due to expenses.
“Kids grow out of equipment so fast,” said Paul. “And it’s usually still in good shape.” Power Play will collect this used equipment and redistribute it to kids who can still use it.
As Paul & team slowly build up to their goals for Power Play Sports Foundation Inc., they continue to work with Servico to make the progression a bit simpler.
Paul said he wanted to share his story so that if someone else is thinking of starting up a not-for-profit, they see that it doesn’t have to be a complicated process.
Paul came to Servico based off a recommendation from his grandfather, Bob Weldon, of The Weldon & Trimper Law Firm. Bob Weldon and Paul Trimper’s father (also named Paul Trimper) have been clients of Servico for years through their law firm.
